The Australian drive in the TcrrlOellt mountains has gained impetus with tho capture of strategic heights and the clearing of the Japanese from their vicinity. This is announced in an ofteial release by the Army to-day. There has been a general forward movement m most areas of the Aitape sector. The Statement adds: “One important hill position captured had always bean a threat to our continued advance.’’ Tbe statement also revealed that in New Britain the Australians are contacting larger forces of tbe enemy in the Wide Bay area. In Bougainville the Australians driving north have captured an Important feature—Down Hill. With the clearing of Mosigetta the Australians are pushing steadily inward* in the East Puriata River area. In southwest Bougainville the capture of Mosigetta ends “the battle of the swamps" in which the Austrelian troops showed remarkable endurance and courage In the face of determined Japanese rearguard actions.
