County Affairs

The county clerk, at the December meeting of the Pahiatua County Council, intimated that Mrs. C. Cornelius Walker, of Mangahao, had donated an oil painting depicting “The Borough Bridge,” which was now adorning the Council Chambers. Mrs. Walker, daughter of the late Mr. Harry Cornelius, who was councillor for the Mangahao Riding for many years and who occupied the office of chairman for several terms, expressed the hope that similar gifts of well-known landmarks of the district might De donated and hung from time to time in the Council Chambers. It is also interesting to relate that the subject matter has been very faithfully portrayed by the well-known local artist, Miss Marion Tylee, who is to bo complimented on the excellence of her wont. Tl- county chairman, Mr. C. H. Hodgins, In moving that a letter of appreciation be sent to the donor, paid a tribute to the thoughtfulness and generosity of Mrs. Walker, and expressed the hope that her action would be emulated in the future by other residents of the county. A ratepayer wrote to the County Council recently, complaining that the practice of throwing dead stock into creeke and rivers was becoming more common, with consequent pollution and danger to health. It was decided to refer the matter to the inspector of health for future action. The tracing of offenders, it was appreciated, would be difficult, but the hope was expressed that a little publicity might cause tlie offenders to give serious thought to the dangers to public health through their own thoughtless actions, and so lessen or remove a growing evil to the community at large. The County Council requested the county clerk, Mr. J. Hutton, to continue to act as its representative at all patriotic functions, since it was difficult in these days of benzine restrictions to ensure that either the chairman or any councillor would be present. Mr. Hutton has given

long and conscientious service in the past and his representation was appreciated by the council.
