Big National Victory in Awarua By-eletion
CL R. Herron Elected by 2101 Majority (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 29. After one of the most interesting and keenly fought by-elections for many years the National Party retained the Awarua seat on Saturday by a big majority. The final figures, including the votes of the Porces in New Zealand and overseas, were: G. R. Herron (National) .. 4669 L. S. O’Sullivan (Labour) .. 2558 R. J. Henderson (Real Democracy) 249 Majority for Herron 2101 Mr. Henderson last his deposit. Mr. Herron had majorities at 46 of tho 49 polling booths. The three exceptions were Bluff, Greenhills (near Bluff) and Halfmoon Bay (Newman Island). The poll was not a large one. A total of 7456 votes were cast compared with the roll number of 10,649. About 100 absentee votes are yet to be counted. The Porces votes showed a majority for Herron, the figures being: Herron 44, O’Sullivan 37, Henderson 2.
