ALRIGHT BEAT MASTER TED IN WANGANUI GUINEAS INDIAN SPORT AND WHACKIE WIN BIG HANDICAPS GOOD DAY FOR TOPWEIGHTS The feature of Saturday’s racing at Wanganui on Saturday was the success of the favourites which won six races. In the Guineas the Inflation—Damaris gelding, Alright, beat Master Ted whose chances were not improved by having to cover extra ground on the home turn. There were showers during the day but the conditions otherwise were fairly good with the going favouring the mudlarks. There was a fcood attendance and the totalisator handled £32,684 10s, compared with £40,757 on the second day at Marton last year. The total for the meeting was £60,241 10s, as against £73,580. Siglow Shines. In the Gonville Hurdles Siglow ran on better than he had done on the first day and won fairly well from Ascot Bloom, Siglow was in front fairly early in the contest, and was going very freely nearing the straight. Ascot Bloom had been well back early and this time finished on nicely to be within half a neck of Siglow at the winning post. Greek Effort, always prominent, weakened in the straight, and Blue Title, who ran a fair race, cut him out of third money. The Champ fell at' the second hurdle. - * Ann Bank Too Good. Ann Bank was too good for the very weak lot which contested the Apprentice Jockeys’ Hack Handicap. She soon took the lead and though challenged at the entrance to the straight by Breezealong held her off to win by three'l .alters of a length. Penwilt was a poor tnird and Etianthus fourth. The Guineas. The Guineas was regarded as a match between Master Ted and Alright and so it proved, with Alright prevailing. Tifox led along the back by several lengths and at the three furlongs Master Ted was alongside him on the outer. On the turn Tifox hung out, taking Master Ted with him and allowing Alright to come through next the rails. Alright gained a further advantage when. Master Ted and Tifox collided at the distance, and in the end Alright won by threequarters of a length. Third place went to Tifox, but hers was a poor third. Comrade was fourth. Easy for Reorapa. Reorapa was a short priced favourite for the Trial Handicap and he maintained the winning sequence for favourites. The field had not gone far before h had taken complete charge. Desert Victory, Jackels, Battle Royal, Dawn Flight and Manutere followed him into the straight but had no chance with him and Reorapa won decisively by four lengths from Desert Victory with Dawn Flight three lengths away third and Battle Royal was. fourth. Another for Indian Sport. Peter's Choice carried more money than Indian Sport in the Higgie Handicap but he was beaten into third place. Indian Sport quickly found his feet when the barrier went up and he led early from Alchemy, Voltaire, Peter s Choice, Kinsman and Broiviene. There was not much change at the five except that Broiviene had moved up to Peter’s Choice behind Indian Sport and Alchemy. The field was bunched at the home turn with Indian Sport, Alchemy and Peter’s Choice still the most prominent. In the run to the judge Indian Sport hung on well and he won nicely by half a length from Alchemy with Peter’s Choice only half a neck further away. Kinsman was close up fourth. Broiviene weakened over the last bit and Voltaire was never dangerous. Merger Upset Calculations. The best dividend of the day was returned by the Awapuni-trained gelding, Merger, in the Moutoa Hack Handicap. There were twelve starters and Merger was seventh in the betting order, the favourite being Sovereign Dad. Merger led at the five from Shassallee and Sovereign Lad, Hulabaloo, Martial Note and Verify. Singing Hills, last early, improved his position approaching the faxturn axxd the order into the straight was Mergfer and* Sovereign Lad from Hulabaloo, Martial Note, Shassallee, Singing Hills and War Effort. The finish was a good one but Merger stuck on gamely and wolf well by a length from Martial Note which just beat Hulabaloo for second. Singing Hills was close up fourth and Sovereign Lad and War Effort were next. Verify broke down. Great Performance by Whackie. Whackie, despite the steadier of 10.4, was favourite for the Owen Handicap. He was in front most of the way and as he drew away in the straight to win decisively he gave the public thrill. He was roundly applauded as he returned to the birdcage. Lady Agora was slow away and when the held had settled down the. order was Whackie from Plato Lad, Theolateral, Black Plato and Park Light. Whackie led round the home turn irom Plato- Lad, Black Plato, Theolateral and Cramond Bay and once into the straight Plato Lad and Black Plato issued good challenges. Whackie, however, shook them olf and drew right away to win oy nearly three lengths from Black Plato who beat Plato Lad by well over a length. Cramond Bay was iourili followed by Park Light and Theolateral. Royal Heir Won As He Liked. Royal Heir won the last race as he liked and he was the sixth favourite to win during the day. Saludos was left and within a furlong Royal Heir was leading from Waipero, Dancing Water, Kilarney Boy, Silver Note and Manutere, the last three being in line. Royal Heir took them along at a good clip to the home turn where his nearest attendants were Waipero,’ Dancing Water, Silver Note, Manutere and Kilarney Boy. Royal Heir was a clear leader and he increased the margin in the run home, winning easily by four lengths from Kilarney Boy who beat Waipero by a length. was fourth and Silver Note next.
