Important Advance On Warsaw Front
Received Friday, 8.60 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 1. Russian troops have entered Bucharest. Marshal Stalin announced that the Second Ukrainian Army had routed the Germans south of Ploesti and had swept on to the Rumanian capital. This, Marshal Stalin says, removes the German threat to the city from the north. Less than a week ago Bucharest said the Rumanian troops had finally liberated the city from the Germans. In the great Russian advance to Bucharest, over 250 towns and villages were liberated by the Soviet troops during yesterday’s fighting in the Ploesti Area. The Russians took more than 7000 prisoners, including a general, and the body of another German general was found among the dead.
In* Poland, the Russians have capRadzymin, a railway station 12 miles northeast of Warsaw, and nine other places. The Exchange Telegraph’s Moscow correspondent expresses the opinion that Rokossovsky’s capture of Radzymin, a suburb of Warsaw, is the prelude to a decisive assault against Warsaw. The German News Agency say 3 strong formations of Luftwaffe battle planes since August 30 have been heavily pounding parts of Warsaw to eliminate the last resistance positions of the Polish patriots within the city.
