Huge Profits for Australian Bootleggers
Received Tuesday, 10.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 29,
“Despite many arrests and unceasing police efforts bootlegging is flourishing here,” declares the Sydney Sun. “To-day prices are at a record. Beer is selling for up to £4 10s a dozen and diluted whisky for as much as £6 a bottle.
The police declare the racket to be as well organised as that run by American bootleggers during the prohibition era. While liquor for civilians is scarce the bootleggers apparently command extensive supplies. Last week in one district alone 500 bottles of beer and several dozen of wine were seized by the police. Included in it was Australian champagne officially priced at 8s 9d a bottle but sold for £3 10s on the black market. While 67 arrests have been made in the past two months the police say the arrested men are only the ‘agents for the organising racketeers who are reaping huge profits.
