Feilding Chamber of Commerce
Mr. D. H. Melnness presided fit tlie meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce, and was offered congratulations on his election to the local Borough Council, together "with the successful candidates for local body honours and members of the Chamber, who had not been returned to office, who were commended for their interest in public affairs. A motion of sympathy with relatives of the late Lieut. Noel Bramwell was carried, following the chairman’s reference to Lieut. Bramwell ’s distinguished career in Italy where his commission was gained. It was decided to adopt the revised rules of the Chamber prepared by Mr. T. L. Seddon, and application is to be made for the Chamber to be known as the Feilding Chamber of Commerce, Incorporated. The proposed town clock was again a subject of discussion, several speakers expressing the view that a public meeting should be held in order to ascertain the general feeling towards the project. There were, it was stated, people who were not in agreement with the site and others who felt that the whole question of erecting the clock .Should be deferred until ,jl comprehensive town planning programme is considered. The chairman stated that the Chamber and the Borough Council would .welcome the views of the community as expressed at a public meeting, but the Chamber had in the interests of tho town and business community resolved in tho matter by undertaking to raise the money and permission to- do so had been given by the Borough Council. Further progress would be made when the newly-elected Council took office. In the course of the discussion, it was mentioned that a well-known theatrical company had acquired a block of buildings in Fergusson Street with the intention of erecting a modern theatre. Mr. Maclnnes was appointed to speak at tho complimentary function in honour of Hon. J. G. Cobbe. For the purpose of organising plans for the beautification of the town, a public meeting is to be called next month, and invitations are to be extended to the Horticultural .Society, tho Community Centre, and other organisations. The unsatisfactory condition of the- Ivimbolton Koad level crossing was discussed and it. was pointed out that shunting operations still caused the highway to be blocked at busy times. The matter is to be further discussed at the next meeting. The question of earlier closing hours for business premises during the winter months in order to save electricity was referred to the retailers’ committee.
