Congratulations from the College Street School committee and staff were offered to Mr. F. G. Opie, chairman of the committee, upon his re election to the Palmerston North City Council, at the school committee meeting on Monday night. Corporal L. I. Plimmer, of Palmerston North, just back from the Pacific, was given a hearty welcome at yesterday’s inter-provincial conference of tho Farmers' Union. Mr. Plimmer is secretary of the Manawatu Provincial exocutivc.

The inler-provineial conference of the Farmers' Union in Palmerston North yesterday paid tribute to the services rendered the organisation by Mr. Hugh Morrison, Awatoitoi, Masterton, who has retired from the Wairarapa presidency after 24 years. The death has occurred in Auckland of Dr. George de Clive Lowe who had lived in retirement for five years. He was formerly one of Auckland's leading surgeons and a pioneer iu radiology and bacteriology. His son, Major Trevor de Clive Lowe, N.Z.M.C., returned to Now Zealand on June 6, 3942, after being captured at Sidi Rezegh in November, 1941, and spending four months in an Italian prisoner of war camp. Another, son, Major Selwyn G. de Clive Lowe, N.Z.M.C., has been for three years a prisoner of war in Germany. The death occurred on Sunday, affVr a brief illness, of Mr. William Septimus Pearce, member of a well-known Wellington family. He was the youngest son of the late Colonel Edward Pearce (senior partner in the firm of Levin and Co., merchants, an cx-M.P., and a one-time chairman of the Wei lington Chamber of Commerce), and a brother of Messrs George and Charles Pearce, also for many years associated with Levin and Co. After leaving college, he also joined the staff of that firm, and for some years before his retirement occupied the position of cash ier. Mr. Pearce was one of the first Wellingtoni&ns to ride a safety bicycle, and he was a prominent figure in the early days of bicycle racing. He was predeceased by his wife (Miss May Driscoll). He leaves & daughter, Mrs. Bryan Bilk, Wanganui. The death occurred on Friday of an old resident of Palmerston North in the person of Mr. William Henry Lewis. Born in Taibach (Wales) 75 years ago, the late Mr. Lewis came to New Zealand when a youth. He lived for & period at Timaru and later at Man&kau before coming to Palmerston North. He entered the timber business in this city, being employed by the Union Timber, Sash and Door Factory and later becoming a member of the firm of Messrs Lewis and Coutts. He married Miss Catherine Maul, the only •laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maul, of Palmerston North, and she predeceased him in 1923. Mr. Lewis had been a keen sportsman from his earliest days, and he was also a well-known member of Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning. Left to mourn their loss are one daughter. Mrs. D. Burt (Ohau) and one son, Mr G. M. Lewis (Kelvin Grove). National War Savings The figures for National War Savings for the city on Tuesday amounted to £163 11s.
