GENERAL NOTICES N.Z. RED CROSS SOCIETY. FEILDING SUB-CENTRE. THIRST AID Lectures commence TOMORROW (Wednesday), May 31st, in Red Cross Rooms, Svcndscn’s Buildings, at 7 p.m. V.A. Detachment meeting, 7 p.m. E. SCOTT, Secretary. HALCOMBE-KAKARIKI BRANCH W.D.F.U. CHOP DAY in Feilding Patriotic ° Shop, FRIDAY, June 2nd, 1944, in aid Housekeeping and General Funds. J All interested invited to assist with donations of produce, etc.

The victim of assault and robbery in Auckland on the morning of May 24, Mr. Leonard Sandbrook was formerly of Peilding, being a son of Mr. and Mrs- J. S. Sandbrook, of Pi'ince Street, Feilding. The assailants knocked Mr. Sandbrook on the head and robbed him of close upon £ 200. He was taken to hospital and yesterday his parents received advice that his condition was only fair. The distinction of recording the highest vote in the elections in Feilding on Saturday goes to Cr. H. J. Dewe who, in the contest for the Foxton Harbour Board seat, polled a total of 1505 votes. The next best vote was that accorded Mr. V. E. Smith, Feilding’s representative on the Hospital Board, who secured a total of 1412 votes. The highest vote in the case of the council was 1377 in favour of Cr. Dewe, while Mr. P. IJ.1 J . Stevens, one of the new councillors, obtained a vote of 1309. The defeat of Cr. Leo Bould at the Feilding elections on Saturday was rather a surprise in view of the good service he has rendered the borough during the time ho has occupied a seat at the council table. Mr. Bould, who is a master plumber, has had a great deal to do with the sewerage system of the town and his knowledge as well as practical assistance in overcoming problems have been of j immense benefit to the town. On the' practical side he was a candidate whom! the town could ill afford to dispense with. With the elections out of the way the Feilding civic authorities are likely to accord priority consideration to the question of the provision of a civic block in the town. This matter has been before past councils and the late council recognised the extent to which Feilding suffers in the absence of this amenity. Public opinion to-day appears ripe for developing a scheme whereby the municipal offices and a Town Hail might be incorporated in one block. From private discussions it would appear that settlers are also manifesting an active interest in the proposal which could bo profitably exploited. There is undoubtedly a call for developing the social amenities of the j town and the new council is likely to follow this up early in its regime. I Prior to the commencement of the Rugby match in Feilding on Saturday afternoon between Fending Old Boys and Kia Toa Mr. J. Gordon Eliott at a gathering of players made feeling reference to the death in action in Italy of Lieutenant Noel Bramwell who was a very prominent member of the Feilding Old Boys’ Club. The receipt of the news had created widespread sympathy and he knew that the club members appreciated that they had suffered an irreparable loss. The late Lieut. Bramwell was a member of a very well known and highly respected family of Feilding and he had by his conduct set an example to others. He had always been most popular and of an agreeable and happy disposition. In Rugby he had made his name for his i clean play and leadership. In the match ; which followed Mr. Eliott’s remarks members of the Old Boys' team wore arm bands out of respect to tho memory of their lamented soldier member.
