The Power of Tickets

The Palmerston North election results show clearly the power of tickets in local body elections. Here as elsewhere throughout the Dominion, Labour suffered a crushing defeat of its ticket but the opposing Citizens * ticket was elected almost 100 per cent In only one case was this not so, where a strong Independent in Mr. 11. Jensen supplanted a Citizen nominee for the Catchment Board. That, however, was the sole score for the many Independent candidates. Had not Labour here as part of its Dominion-wide campaign put up a party ticket, the lot of several notable Independents might have been very different. But as it was, citizens felt that they could not risk the privilege of individual choice of candidates lest party domination result. Thus the Labour Party stands condemned of depriving electors of freedom of choice. Fortunately, however, the elected Citizens’ ticket has provided the city with a sound administration.
