Salaries of Teachers in Post-primary Service

CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. Conditions of employment and salar ies of teachers in the post-primary service were discussed at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Tech nical School Teachers’ Association. The following resolution to be forward ed to tho Minister of Education (Hon 11. G. R. Mason) was carried unani mously: “That tho executive of the N.Z.T.S.T.A. having considered the present situation regarding the payment and status of teachers, urges that the Government should implement witnout further delay, the 1939 Salary Com mittees scheme for post-primary schoo 1 teachers with cortain amendments as an interim settlement, and that the Government be strongly urged to set up immediately a commission in terms of the Consultative Committee’s report: ‘That a commission be set up to inquire into the recruitment, salaries, superan nuation and conditions of employment of the post-primary service.’ And that this commission commence work forthwith.”

two ‘ifs’? It is competent to ask the coal owners, seeing that production was so high at the five mines last year, did they ever give the miners any credit for having worked so hard? “In connection with their charges of absenteeism, it should be remembered that in tho past, they have reported men as unjustifiably absent from work when those men were actually the in mates of a public hospital. It is also in order to say that the mine-owners absenteeism from tho production of coa. is neither 6 per cont. nor 18 per cent. It is just 100 per cent. The principa. functions they perform in tho industry nowadays is periodically to publish provocative statements attacking miners that appear to be inspired by a desire to bring about a stoppage of pro duction. ”

Polish League’s Congratulations The hoisting of the Polish Flag on the conquered heights of Monte Cassino was an auspicious incident in the history of Poland’s long fight for life and liberty. As so many of tho Polish soldiers who have been adopted by New Zealanders are now with the two divisions in Italy, the Headquarters of the League has cabled tho following message to General Anders, C. in C. of Polish forces with the C.M.F.: “Polish Army League sends congratulations to you and gallant troops on magnificent achievement at Monte Cassino. Please convey profound admiration.”
