Mrs. Beveridge, of the Carlton Hotel, has returned from a visit to New Plymouth. Airs. John Marshall, of Lower Hutt, formerly of Palmerston North, is looking up old friends in the city and is the guest of Mrs. James Marshall, of Palmerston North. Sympathy with Mrs. E. 11. Rogers, Bryant Street, was expressed by members of St. Andrew's Social Guild yesterday in the bei-eavement suffered by the death on active service of her son. the meeting standing a moment in silence. Members of St. Andrew’s Social Guild were sad to learn yesterday that Mrs. J. Galland, one of their most valued members, who has carried out the floral decorations year by year, had suffered a serious illness necessitating her removal to the Public Hospital. Voicing the sympathy of her fellow members, the president, Mrs. M. Aitchison, asked that the secretary (.Mrs. C. Fraser) convey the message by letter with hopes for a speedy return to health. Members of the Palmerston North Business Girl3* Club were the guests at a delightful evening tendered by Airs. Raisin at her home in Cuba Street on Monday last when bright lires and a profusion of autumn blooms added to the welcome. Atisses P. and M. Raisin acted as hostesses. Competitions and items occupied the time very happily, Miss V. Royal presenting the prizes to Alesdames M. H. Oram and Riddle. Recitations were contributed by Miss C. Nicholson, and Mrs. Riddle was the piauisto for the evening. Dainty supper was served and Airs. Oram (president) thanked Airs. Raisin and her daughters for their gracious hospitality. Mrs. A. E. Mansford (patroness) was in attendance, also Mesdames F. J. Nathan and Whitehead (vice-presi-dents). St. Andrew’s Memorial Hall was cosy with gas fires yesterday and colourful with autumn flowers and foliage when wives of servicemen overseas and in camp, also mothers with unmarried sons on active service, were the honoured guests of St. Andrew’s Social Guild. Airs. M. Aitchison presided over a large attendance and extended a cordial welcome to the guests and to several visitors, including Airs. John Alarshall, of Lower Hutt, j formerly of Palmerston North, Mrs. Armstrong, of JDupedin, also Airs. Wilson, I Terrace End. Explaining the purpose of the gathering, the president said the ’ members had never responded more readily to any request of the Church Session than this opportunity of contacting young wives whoso husbands were away, and she assured the young mothers their babies would bo well cared for by Aliss S. Collins in the creche. The company l was pleasantly entertained by Alesdames' H. Drake and H. L. Fiebig with vocal duets, also by Alesdames AlcPherson, Al. F. Eaddy, Miss Pollard and Captain 11. Pierard with vocal solos, further pleasuro being provided by Airs. AI. Dymock with elocutionary items. The accompaniments wore played by Alesdames H.. L. Cunninghame, Irwin, Pierard and Alclntyre. The thanks of the meeting were conveyed to the performers by Airs. Aitchison. The hostesses were Alesdames Harley Palmer, I W. AI. Srpith and S. Bradfleld, the last named being responsible for the decorations. A competition arranged by Alcsdames Palmer and Smith was won by Airs. Cunninghame. Rev. %J. Hubbard gave a helpful talk to the young wives and mothers, and Airs. AlcDonald returned thanks on behalf of the guests for the hospitality enjoyed. Rev. Hubbard closed the meeting with the Benediction.
