Primary Education

The Wanganui Education Board met at Wanganui yesterday, southern representatives present being Messrs. W. H. Brown (Palmerston North), I. W. Mudford (Foxton) and J. Batehelar (Waituna). Palmerston North Intermediate: The architect (Mr. E. R. I-lodge) reported:— “The work in connection with the -laying of the asphalt areas at this school has partly been effected but 1 suspended the work because of the contractor failing to carry out the work in accordance with the specifications and I have arranged for an examination to be made in company with the contractor before allowing any further work in connection with the contract to be done. The examination cannot, however, be made until certain consolidation of the area already done has taken place. Some minor plumbing repairs are being effected and it is proposed, while the board’s workmen are in that part of the district, to effect certain minor adjustments to school fittings. Intermediate: The architect reported that the old Awahuri School could be demolished and reerectcd as a lunchroom and gymnasium at the Intermediate School. Further, it would be admirably suited for many other school activities. The cost would be £IOOO which would in elude bringing the building into conformity with the present school building. The architect also submitted a plan of the new lay-out of the school grounds which the board favourably commented on. Application is to be made to the department for the £IOOO. College Street: The architect reported that it was proposed to carry out repairs to broken surfaces of the asphalt. The board approved of the erection of a school bath immediately behind the State houses and the granting of the usual Government subsidy. Rangiotu: The old school building is to b2 removed to Palmerston North to serve as a storehouse for material. Glen Oroua: The board upproved of the construction of a septic tank costing £BO at the teacher’s residence. Linton: The board approved (under certain conditions to be explained to the committee), a grant of £l7 for repairing and topdressing the tennis court. This is two-thirds of the estimate £25 10s). The committee’s application for additional sheltershed accommodation was declined as the time was inopportune—shortage oi material. Mr. Hodge recommended an extension of the outhouse accommodation to cost £6O, which the board approved. The department declined an application for a grant towards the cost of reerecting the Sunday School hall destroyed by fire. The hall had been used as a classroom. Accrediting Schools: The board decided ta ask that the Taihape, Ohakune, Marlon and Foxton District High Schools be given the privilege of accrediting students. It was stated that the recent matriculation examination results at the four schools named, compared very favourably with the Dominion average. Tapuae: The teacher asked for a ruling regarding the absence of a child one day per week to enable her to take music lessons In Feilding. Brcnton-Rule, headmaster, Tokorangi; Miss M. Leamy, assistant mistress, Lytton Street; Mr. \Y. A. Munro, assistant master, Terrace End; Mrs. S. A. D. Ryan, infant mistress, Keith Street; Miss N. B. Brown, secondary assistant, Foxton D.H.; Miss D. J. Whyte, assistant mistress, Parewanui, Miss I’. Brownie, assistant mistress. Uliku; Miss I\ Goggin, temporary sole teacher, Taumatatahi. War appointment: Mrs. D. I. rainier, sole teacher, Pakihikura. Arising out of an accident to a motor truck on Awahuri Road, C. N. Houghton, farmer, was fined £2 and costs 12s for employing an unlicenced motor driver. Sgt. Turner explained the defendant had employed a boy aged 14i years to assist on his farm owing to being unable to secure other labour. The boy could drive a car but being under ago could not obtain a driver’s license. It was while driving a farm truck to pick up skim milk for pigs that the truck got out of contrcfi and the boy was slightly injured.
