The HEAT RATION is adequate for GOOD HEALTH! If your diet is properly balanced, the following daily amounts of meat are regarded by world nutrition experts as sufficient: At i year—l ounce. At II years —2s ounces. At 7 years l£ ounces. At 12 years (and over) At 9 years —2 ounces. Our ration provides for about 6 ounces daily. It allows for bone, gristle and fat and still leaves plenty for health. Meat is a main source of PROTEIN, which makes children grow, and repairs and renews the body. In New Zealand too large a proportion of our protein has come from meat. We were among the largest meateaters in the world. Some of our protein should come from MILK— 2 glasses daily for adults, 3-4 for children, skim milk for cooking. CHEESE AND EGGS —When available: these are good sources. PEAS, BEANS, LENTILS, PEANUTS are satisfactory sources. Whole cereals, Potatoes and green, leafy vegetables also supply a little protein. And remember, these other protein foods have qualities not found in meat. Use them in your meals. Try Cheese Custard, Lentil and Onion Pie, Bacon and Beans, Pea Croquettes, Soused Eel, Baked Stuffed Rabbit. Balance your diet and you’ll be better for eating less meat!
