On the plough Fort Royal (B. George), who has not shown the improvement expected of him, took 39sec. to run three furlongs. This was improved on by his stable-mate Ring Chief (N. Bales), who sprinted three furlongs, in STJsec. The riders are apprentices of L. George and were having their first fast trials. Clarice (Clutterbuck) was again given solid pace work. Clarice'has done plenty of racing and two sprints should see her near her best again. Corday, ridden b" Clutterbuck, who will ride him in the Taranaki Cup next .Saturday, again galloped six furlongs. He went slowly over the first three furlongs in 39 and finished in 1.17, the last two taking Cetawayo (Neill) timed over the last four of a five furlong gallop, took 51, running well. War Effort (Flower), who has not been working well lately, took 1.22 to run six furlongs. Battledress (Holland) had his first stretch-out since racing at Trentham. He finished his pace work by sprinting home three furlongs in 38i. Peter’s Choice (Harris) galloped five furlongs in 1.4 after running the first two Two smart sprints over two furlongs were performed by Etianthus (Moore) and Etta Quex (Moore). Etianthus took 23i and Etta Quex 23. Black Plato (Holland) and Sedgemere (Clutterbuck) finished in front of Platinum Wings (Flower) at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. Platinum Wings led early, but struck herself and was sore on pulling up. Magic Chief (Potroz) worked lazily over five furlongs in 1.6 J. On the outside of the course proper Alderman (Holland) and Miss Corvette (Clutterbuck) galloped half a mile in 52, Alderman showing to advantage. Chilworth (Holland) shaded Apocalypse (Clutterbuck) over half a mile in 521. Vermette (.Moore) ran well to register 51 4-5 for half a mile. SATURDAY'S FAST WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH Little fast work was done on the New Plymouth tracks on Saturday morning. The plough was used for fast and strong work. Jonathan Jo (Dulieu) and Sunblaze (Carter) did two rounds at 151 to the furlong. Entertainer (Fryer) sprinted five furlongs in 1.21, the last four taking 51. Wave On (Fryer) took 521 for four furlongs. This filly works better in company. Gay Theio (Fryer) ran six furlongs in 1.2. - Breezealong (Fryer) was responsible for a sound effort over four furlongs in 501. Pongi (Kamo) and Mali ilia (Eley) worked over nine furlongs. They went at a good working speed until they reached the three-furlongs peg, where they increased speed to come home in 371. Mansura (Hart) was picked up by Francis Mond (Kamo) over the last two of a seven-furlong gallop. Mansura’s time was 1.33 for the seven furlongs. OKATO HACK RIDERS The Taranaki Jockey Club has been given permission to dispense with the condition that apprentice riders only were to take part in the Okato Hack Handicap at the autumn meeting.
