ARTILLERY DUEL IN ANZIO SECTOR
Allied Air Force Maintains Its Activity United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 1.16 a.m. LONDON, February 22. A relatively quiet day was spent on all fronts, states a communique from advanced Headquarters in Italy. Local fighting, however, occurred at three points. On the Fifth Army’s front artillery from both sides fired heavy conosntrations. Activity continued on the main Fifth Army and Eighth Army fronts. An American patrol on Sunday night drove off a group of enemy E-boats attempting to approach Anzio. One E-boat blew up after it was hit and a second is believed to have been driven ashore. Medium bombers yesterday attacked the railway yards and docks at Leghorn. Fighter-bombers continued their offensive against troops, gun positions and supply dumps in the beachhead area, while fighters patrolled the same area. Three enemy planes were destroyed. We lost none. The Mediterranean Air Force flew approximately 500 sorties, while enemy activity over the beachhead totalled about 60 sorties.
