City’s Water Supply

The Palmerston North City Council is taking many steps in the endeavour to conserve the city’s water supply during the present dry spell and these include restricted supplies to a number of public utilities. One Government Department which consumes a large quantity of water is now obtaining its requirements elsewhere. The Council is pumping into the mains water from the artesian well at the gasworks, which will help a little. The position of the Palmerston. North Hospital has greatly improved since the construction of the new water tower. The last severe water shortage had occurred in 1939, when on February 21 the level was 3ft. BJiu. below the spillway. Rain came on March 11 and the position improved. However, by April 19 the water had dropped to sft. 81in. below the spillway. The position improved on April 21 when rain fell in large quantities. An absolute drought the weather men define as a period of 15 days without any measurable rainfall, a fortnight with an extra day thrown in for luck apparently. A partial drought is a period of 29 days (four weeks with a similar extra day) during which the total rainfall does not exceed 29 points, or an average of a point a day.
