Scottish Afternoon At League of Mothers

Iceland poppies and London pride formed the main decorations at the November meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the League of Mothers held yesterday in the lted Cross hall. Mrs. J. Barsanti presided over a large attendance and voiced particular pleasure in the presence of Mrs. E. W. Drake (hon. secretary) after her illness. She welcomed members of the Terrace End branch, Scottish members of Church Guilds, who were guests of the afternoon, several members who had been absent through illness, also Mrs. Hurlington, who is visiting the city. Sympathy was expressed with sick members. As it was a Scot’s afternoon, the programme was arranged accordingly. An invitation was received from Terrace End branch for Scots’ members to attend their November meeting, also from Levin branch for the officers to attend their meeting next week, the president intimating they hoped to attend. Miss Grant solicited help on behalf of the Friendly Bureau of the W.W.S.A., and hospital visitors were arranged for the coming month. Mrs. King reported having extended greetings from the branch to Whangarei members when in that town recently. A letter of appreciation for sympathy in her anxiety was received from Mrs. English, former Dominion president. Pleasure was given to the company by Miss Pollard (accompanied by Mrs, H. L. Cunninghame) and Mrs. Fraser, accompanied by Mrs. Bigham with vocal solos, suitable to the day, also by the League choir led and accompanied by Mrs. Bigham in Scottish numbers. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. W. J. Alountjov, who took her audience on a delightful tour of Scotland, concluding with some Scottish poems which greatly pleased her audience. There were a number of surprise gifts during the afternoon and the usual floral tributes were presented to the ladies providing the programme. Mrs. Barsanti thanked the speaker, Mrs. Marshall, voicing appreciating to the artists, and Mrs. Child thanked the tea
