Heavy Air Blows Against Jap Dromes
Received Thursday, 9.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 4. The American ground forces have consolidated and enlarged their beach head at Empress Augusta Bay. The Japanese in the area abandoned 135 dead. General MacArthur-s communique which gives details of the progress in the Solomons land fighting adds: ■•Torpedo bombers supported the troops and tighter patrols in numerous clashes shot down 21 Japanese fighters and seven other planes were probably destroyed. Buka and Bonis aerodromes were at tacked with 28 tons of bombs, Kara aerodrome with 46 tons, and Kahili with 143 tons. Grounded aircraft anu small coastal vessels were destroyed. " A war correspondent in the South Pacific says Admiral Halsey’s spokes man reported the capture by American Marines of Sangigai on Choiseul Island. The Marines seized quantities of sup plies and equipment as the force of a hundred Japanese retreated southeastwards.
