Sardinia in Easy Range of Italy
LONDON, Sept. 19. The British United Press’s Algiers correspondent says the possession ot Sardinia presents the Allies with an unsinkable aircraftcarrier within easy flying distance of the whole of the Axis-occupied c'oast from Salerno northwards to the Gulf of Genoa, then westwards across the Riviera to the Spanish border. It also brings the Allies SOO miles nearer France and provides a base for an attack against Corsica. Reports from La Linea (Spain) state that three convoys totalling over 100 freighters and tankers passed from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean yesterday, German planes reported that great Allied transport armadas were moving eastwards from the Western Mediterranean. In the course of air operations in the Eastern Mediterranean yesterday R.A.F. fighters from Middle East bases met formations of German bombers ana fighters. Seven enemy aircraft were shot down. At night Wellingtons bombed the airfield at Maritza (Rhodes).
