Japs Use Balloon Barrage

Received Sunday, 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 6. The Japanese used barrage balloons for the first time in the Pacific was in an attempt to protect the convoy at Wewak and they were sent up from both ships and shore. The Mitchells, however, dived under the balloons, dodged the wires and pressed home the attack in face of intense anti-aircraft fire. The convoy, comprising five freighters with an escort of two destroyers, arrived off Wewak on Wednesday night and was running reinforcements and supplies from off shore anchorages. Some of the supplies and troops probably got ashore. After the attack the Mitchells strafed and sank numerous small harbour craft.
