Mr. James Bull, president of the Marton Jockey Club, who is well-known as a show-ring judge of equestrian events, is at present a patient in a private hospital in Huntervijlc.
Flying Officer D. J. Smith, of the R.N.Z.A.F., who was reported missing but who is now known to be a prisoner of war in Germany, is the son of Commissioner and Mrs. J. Evan Smith, leaders of tho Salvation Army in the Dominion.
At a meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Mr. W. M. Sexton was appointed one of the chamber's delegates to attend the annual conference of the Associated Chambers to be held in Dunedin in November.
Mr. Matenga Peka, of Eastbourne, announces that he will stand as unofficial Labour candidate for the Western Maori electorate at present represented by Mr. Batana. Mr. Peka, who is 41, had a legal training before becoming a member of the Otaki Borough Council’s clerical stall. For some years, he was iu business ou his own account as a bus aud laxi proprietor iu Otaki. Recently he joined the Eastbourne Borough Council's bus department. He is well known in turf circles.
The death occurred at Hawera on Saturday of Mr. Ronald Charles Hay* Mackenzie, who was well known throughout South Taranaki as a banker and throughout the province as an enthusiastic golfer. He was manager of the Haw eta branch of the Bank of New Zealand from 1920 to 3931, a prominent member of the Hawera Rotary Club, a member of the executive of the Automobilo Association (South Taranaki), and holder of numerous positions iu the Hawera Golf Club. Lengthy service to the game of lawn tennis in the Dominion has been fittingly recognised in the election of Mr. J. T. McDonald, of Palmerston North, to the position of president of tho New Zealand Lawn Tenuis Association. Mr. McDonald has been connected with the game in an administrative capacity for many years, as well as being no mean exponent in play. After acting as secretary for the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club, he came to Palmerston North 30 years ago and joined the Terrace End Club. Two years later he joined the Palmerston North Club and was for some time its president. Ho is now a vice-president of the club. Ten years ago he was elected a delegate to the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association and has been a member over since, holding at present the office of president.
