New Leader for New Order
All who listened to Ihe election campaign opening addresses by the Prime Minister and the Opjiosition leader, and who exercised an impartial judgment upon the two, must be impressed with a notable contrast. Mr. Fraser manifested a weariness and nervousness that markedly differed from the confidence and vigour of Mr. Holland’s utterance. Certainly Mr. Holland has the advantage of the comparative youth of 50 years of age. He is in the prime of life. The Prime Minister on the other hand must be approaching- tln-ee-scoro and ten years, and he has furthermore the worry of a very troublesome campaign in his own electorate. Perhaps this concern was responsible for tlic faltering openin'* to his address with its personal references to his previous election campaigns. That was not in keeping with what was to be expected of a nation’s leader opening a general election campaign in wartime. Too low a note was struck as compared with the altitude of his office. The Opposition leader showed himself truly a national leader above personalities and teacup storms. Thus the impression was left that there was here a new leader to lead the new order in New Zealand—a man with freshness of outlook and the vigour initiative and enterprise to cope with all the problems that must arise.
