Visit of Miss Cocks-Johnston
A most Interesting and instructive demonstration was given on Tuesday, August 17, in the Jubilee Hall, Ilalcombe, by Miss Cocks-Johnston, garden tutor, on • the preserving and dehydrating of fruit and vegetables, also a talk on soil and manures, planting, etc. There was a good attendance for both morning and afternoon sessions, most people staying all day. The older girls, accompanied by their teachers, from the Kakariki School were present. A practical demonstration on the pruning of fruit trees was also given. Much interest was shown when the lecturer displayed syrup and a maltlike substance obtained from the sugar beet, everybody realising the value of this product for future use. New vegetable seeds were another feature of interest and will no doubt find a place in many gardens this season. The interest being held, the time passed all too quickly.
Miss Cocks-Johnston was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss CooksJohnston visits Palmerston North on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next
