Kumeroa-Hopelands W.I.
Mrs. L. Hills presided over an excellent attendance in August. Miss J. Arrow read the motto for the day. The roll call “a funny story,” brought forth some amusing contributions. Several letters were read from overseas soldiers thanking the Institute for parcels received. Mrs. Miller read her report on the Dominion conference, and the president thanked her. It was decided to hold a dance on Saturday, August 21, in aid of the local soldiers’ parcel fund. The birthday party was arranged for Thursday, October 7. Donations were gx-anted to the Leper Fund, Crippled Children and Prisoners-of-War. Competitions resulted:—Bowl ot shrubs, Mrs. Hills 1, Miss Lynch 2; best bloom, Miss Lang 1, Mrs. Sinclair 2, Miss N. Radford won the junior section. During the afternoon, Lieutenant Keith Elliot, V.C., and Sgt. A. E. Eades paid a surprise visit to the Institute. Sgt. Eades introduced Lieutenant Elliot, who addressed the members, and said how pleasied he was to leet them. He gave a brief account of some of his experiences. Both were accorded musical honours, and hearty cheers. Misses Lang and Lynch served a dainty afternoon tea.
