Palmerston North District Raises £1,130,779

FINE EFFORTS BY PAHIATUA, FEILDING AND DANNEVIRKE

The Third Liberty Loan campaign in the Palmerston North area practically concluded at midday on Saturday with a grand total of £1,130,779. This amount represents 78 per cent, of tbe target fixed for the district, which, all things considered, is a very satisfactory effort.

Like most of the provincial areas, Palmerston North’s quota was altogether out of proportion to its capacity, particularly so as & number of bigger farmers’ contributions were put through Wellington, while some of the largest trading concerns doing business in this district also placed their Dominion contributions in a lump sum through Wellington. Had such amounts as those mentioned been credited to their real source, it is claimed that the district’s target would have been reached and probably passed. An analysis of the amounts raised in the various centres of the Palmerston North area shows that Pahiatuagdid a magnificent job in getting 122 per cent., while Feilding just missed reaching the 100 per cent.

The Feilding Committee under the able leadership of Mr. H. J. Dewe, deputy Mayor, by splendid organisation and enthusiastic work, made a truly remarkable effort, especially in the last two weeks of the campaign. The members of the committee, through inability to discover their exact position on Saturday morning, did not know how much more was needed to roach their quota, and they contend that had they been able to obtain exact information in time they would have reached their objective. The National Savings organisation in the Feilding Post Office handled £24,290 worth of war loan stock and bonds, and £35,645 in national savings. Dannevirke in third place with au excellent 90 per cent, suffered from tho loss of substantial contributions, some of which were registered in Wellington. On Saturday 256 applications were received for £43,735. Of the grand total of £1,130,779, national savings and war bonds contributed £343,815.

Additional applications on Saturdav in Palmerston North included:— Business. Child Bros., Ltd £IOOO Broadway Finances, Ltd. .. 1000 Bridewell’s Bakeries . .. .. ..
