Huge Japanese Losses in China

Reported U.S. Air • Raid on Canton Received Thursday, 8.30 p.m. LONDON, July 8. The Japanese casualties totalled 930,639 to the end of June, 1943, General Ho Ying Chin, Chinese War Minister and Chief of the General Staff, stated to-day. Only 20,642 had been captured. Reviewing the military situation during the past year he said: “On the China front Japanese plans to push westward had been restored to normal, while the defence of Western Yunnan was as strong as ever. In the recent campaign in Western Hupeh about five divisions of enemy troops were smashed and the enemy forces were deteriorating in quality.

“As the result of their heavy losses the Japanese are facing an acute short age of manpower, necessitating the calling of Koreans, Formosans and Chinese in occupied territory who have not the slightest interest in fighting for Japan.”

The Chinese spokesman stated that Chinese troops had fought 71 major battles, 2037 minor engagements and 1033 guerrilla actions with the Japanese.

The Berlin overseas radio announced that 20 American bombers attacked Canton. One was shot down and one badly damaged.
