Apiti
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Aplti D.H. School first swimming sports were held last week. The headmaster, Mr. K. It. Lambie, arranged a demonstration of modern methods of teaching children to swim. This was followed by a short programme of races and water games. Small trophies made at the school of New Zealand woods, were awarded by tho staff to the pupils who have made the most progress in swimming since the opening of the baths. These prizes went to:—lnfants, Noelline Strahan and Hugh Lambie; juniors, Phyllis Mapson and Bob Martin; intermediate, Lorna Payton and Ken Cowan; senior, Killeen Malone and Hugh Mclntyre; secondary, Phyllis Churclier, Pam Enright and Alan Hazeldine. There was an exhibition of handcrafts in the High School. Mr. S. J. Martin, on behalf of parents and friends, thanked the school staff for the interest taken in the welfare of the children and the enthusiasm shown in teaching the children to swim. Mr. W. McKenzie presided at a meeting of the committee of the Apiti R.S.A. when arrangements were made for the annual meeting on Monday, April 12. Arrangements were also made for the Service on Anzac Day. Poppies will be sold in the district during the month. An appeal for books for men overseas was received and it Is hoped that residents who may have any will leave them at the Apiti Store. A few months ago this district was thoroughly canvassed for books with a remarkably successful result but it is hoped that this appeal will meet with some support. The ladies of the district have sent forward another quota of 56 gift parcels, packed as follows:—Apiti W.I. and W.D.F U. members 3S, Table Flat W.I. 6, Utuwai W.I. 12. Almost every home in Apiti has made donations for the parcel fund, and for this quota the treasurer has received £2l i)s to date. Corporals E. S. Payton and D. Stewart and Private C. Mapson were entertained at a largely attended dance organised by the Apiti Patriotic Committee. The M.’sC. were Messrs. W. McKay and C. Searle. Messrs. E. Bramwell, T. K. McLean and D. Malone played for the dances. Mr. W. McKenzie (R.S.A.) and Mr. C. Spence, for tho Young Farmers’ Chib, the Football Club and the Athletic Sports Club paid tribute to the three young men who had all given good service to the district, and conveyed to them the good wishes of members of the various organisations. Mr. McKay recalled that these three boys had proceeded to camp two years ago with an Apiti platoon who had all volunteered at the same time. He made presentations to the guests and expressed the wish that he hoped they would be returning home in good health in the not too distant future. A group of willing helpers assisted the social committee to serve supper. The “Busy Bees,” a group of gills and boys who work for missions under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jensen, Miss Cowan and helpers, were on Saturday afternoon entertained at a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Spence. Games, competitions and after-
noon tea were enjoyed by the 24 children who were photojp'aphed by Mr. Jensen.
