Halcombe

(From our Own Correspondent.) At an executive meeting of the Halcombe E.P.S., Mr. K. A. Robinson, who has been transferred to Granity, was the recipient of a chiming clock In recognition of his services as secretary. Mr. C. A. J. Abbiss complimented Mr. Robinson on the capable manner in which he had built up the local organisation and expressed regret at his departure. Other speakers also paid tribute to the zeal displayed by Mr. Robinson. Mr. R. G. Burgess presided at the annual meeting of the Halcombe branch of the R.S.A. A welcome was extended to new members, among whom were returned soldiers from the present war. The balance-sheet and report indicated a healthy position. Sympathy was extended to the relatives of the late Mr. William Dais, who was an old and esteemed member. Arrangements were made for members to attend the Anzac service and luncheon at Feilding and a service will also be held at Halcombe. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr. R. G. Burgess; vice-president, Mr. N. Blunden; secretary, Mr. R. D. Elgar; committee, Messrs S. Anderson, R. L. Fergusson, N. Ashworth and J. Mills. The annual meeting of the KakarikiHalcombe branch of the W.D.F.U. was presided over by Mrs. I. L. Brett. The shop day held at Feilding was very successful and congratulations were extended to those responsible. It was decided to forward the usual soldiers’ parcels and a donation of £1 Is will be made to the Rest Home, Awapuni. Miss M. Mason consented to make the wreath for the Anzac Day service at which the branch will be represented. The dahlia competition resulted:—Giant decorative: Mrs. J. Fergusson 1, Mrs. A. McNae 2; pompom: Mrs. W. S. Page 1, Mrs. McNae 2; charm: Mrs. J. Fergusson 1, Mrs. A. McNae 2; cactus: Mrs. J. Blunden 1, Mrs. W. S. Page 2. Mrs. E. O. Pryce acted as judge. Mrs. I. L. Brett was re-elected president and Mesdames E. W. Barnett and J. Blunden, vice-presidents. House-keeping secretaries for the ensuing year are Mesdames A. Callingliam and J. Blunden. Miss P. Blunden will again carry out the secretarial duties, and Mrs. and Miss Scales will act as delegates. Meetings will in future be held at three monthly intervals. During the month uf March, the H.W.P.C. forwarded the following woollen goods to Zone E Headquarters, Feilding:—Five balaclavas, 4 scarves, 2 pair mittens, 2 pair socks and 2 flying jerseys. Five sets of knitted comforts were presented at two functions held recently. Sapper N. Prior and Pte. A. Cox were the guests at a complimentary function recently. Mr. W. S. Page, vice-president of the Patriotic Committee, handed the guests tokens and Mrs. E. Williams presented woollen comforts. Card winners were:—Mesdames J. O’Sullivan and J. Blunden and Messrs J. Blunden and L. Fergusson. Miss E. Wishnowsky has returned from a holiday spent at Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Cowdrey have returned from Rotorua. Mrs. F. Collins, 'New Plymouth, has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. and N. Blunden, Kakariki. Miss D. Ambler and Miss Joyce Hicks, Wanganui, have returned homo after a holiday spent with Mrs. A. McNae, “Bushlands.” At the Methodist Church Harvest Thanksgiving Service, a sale of produce realised £2O. Mr. R. Fergusson, on behalf of the congregation, handed Rev. K. A. Robinson a wallet and the Ladies’ Guild presented MrS. Robinson with a handbag.
