Feilding A. and P. Association

The quality of the serpentine-super mixture which is being distributed was the subject of adverse comment by Mr. L. J. Wild at a meeting of the Feilding A. & P. Association on Friday night when it was agreed to direct the attention of all A. & P. Associations to the position and at the same time request that they approach the Department of Agriculture recommending that adequate specifications be drawn up to safeguard the quality of the mixture. Mr Wild brought samples of the serpen-tine-super mixture to tiie meeting to enable those present to appreciate for themselves the nature of the fertiliser which was being distributed. The quality, notably iu regard to fineness of grinding of the serpentine rock, was short of that required to obtain the best results from the mixture.

The meeting in response to a letter from the Mayor of Feilding (Mr. T. L. Seddon) agreed to nominate Mr. A. U. Buist as the farming and commercial interests’ representative on the proposed District Rehabilitation Committee. It was decided to ask the Farmers’ Union and the Chamber of Commerce to support this nomination. Replying to a question raised, farmers present stated that this district was not suitable for he growing of linen flax in large quantities such as would be required to justify the establishment of a factory for handling the product, it was stated that in one or two cases experiments had proved satisfactory, but not generally. The flax -plant, like wheat, needed dry climatic conditions for the harvesting period. A brief .report on the recent ram fair was placed before the committee. This showed that the fair was quite satisfactory from a financial aspect. .Suggestions .for improvement in the conduct of the fair were made and these were referred to the ram fair committee.
