U.S. Marine Injured; Racehorse Destroyed

UNUSUAL SERIES OF MISHAPS (Special to ‘ ‘ Times. ’’) HASTINGS, Mar. 6. Unusual circumstances were involved in a series of mishaps at the corner of King Street and St. Aubyn Street, Hastings, yesterday afternoon, in which an American Marine was injured and a well-known racehoxso injured and subsequently shot. The Marine was riding the racehorse Manifesto along King Street when it got out of control. At the intersection of St. Aubyn Street the horse slipped on the asphalt and threw its rider, Thomas Stubbs, of Texas. The horse, which was owned by Mr. D. McKcowan, Hastings, was subsequently hit by a truck, driven by John 11. E. Beck, of Napier, and suffered a broken front leg. It was later shot by Mr. IT. R. Green, of the Borough Traffic Department. The rider of the horse suffered from bruises and was badly shaken. He was carried into a nearby house and was attended by a doctor, who ordered him to the Memorial Hospital. This morning the Marine’s condition was reported as satisfactory.
