Question in House On Army Harvesters

WELLINGTON, Mar. 4. “Is the acting-Minister of Defence aware that in some cases members of the armed forces are being asked to work a ten-hour day in the harvest field and even on threshing mills, on Army pay, and if they refuse, are put on the mat and given C. 8.?” asked Mr. Clyde Carr (Timaru), in an urgent question to the acting-Minister of Defence, in the House. Hon. P. Fraser said he had no personal knowledge that the conditions outlined by Mr. Carr existed but he would obtain an immediate report on the matter and make a statement as soon as the facts were available. From information he had received he thought the men generally were very happy to be in the harvest fields which provided a change from the monotony of camps.
