To Take Dent Out of Russian Line
(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON Feb. 26. Despite Bussian official silence, Stockholm despatches suggest that a major offensive lias opened on the central front. The Daily Telegraph’s Stockholm correspondent says that Marshal Timoshenko’s armies, taking advantage of the hard weather favouring tanks, are driving against the German stronghold of Gzhatsk covering Viazma and Smolensk. The Bussians have smashed through a German outpost line and reached the main defences, where savage fighting is going on.
The Stockholm correspondent of the Times says that the Orel battle is extending northward and -has- joined the Viazma-Gzhatsk front into an active area. The German positions at Gzhatsk. which has been held since 1941, are only 100 miles from Moscow. The desirability of driving them back is obvious, but it is not known whether the Bussians are primarily aiming at this in a real or feigned offensive.
