Two Years’ Gaol for Desertion

WELLINGTON, Feb. 26. A sentence of two years’ gaol with hard labour was imposed on Trooper Robert George Burns, aged 24, married, with one child, of the sth Reinforcement, N.Z.E.F., who pleaded guilty to desertion at a Wellington district courtmartial recently. He deserted at Fremantle, not rejoining his transport in April, 1941. After adventurous journeys afoot and on a bicycle round the fringe of the Northern Territory, he settled down in Brisbane, where he was a year in business as a motor-cycle mechanic before being arrested by the Australian military police in January, 1943.
