Rev. Clarence Eaton, of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Palmerston North, returned from Christchurch yesterday, where he has been attending the Methodist Conference. The death has occurred of Mr. Prank Mussen, aged 72, who had been associated with Invercargill news£mpers t'or nearly 60 years. He was wellknown as a sporting writer under the pen name of * ‘ Sir Modred. * * Mrs. S. G. Northey, Linton Street, has received word that her son, Bergr. J. P. Northey, has gained his Master of Law degree with honours in the recent examinations. Sergt. Northey, who has had a brilliant scholastic career, is an old boy of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. One of the oldest Justices of the Peace in New Zealand, Mr. P. C. Wilson, of Marton, celebrated his 90th birthday on Wednesday, when ho was met by representatives of the Justices of the Peace Association, civic interests, and other citizens. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson received warm congratulations and good wishes, as well as gifts. Mr. Wilson was born in Bromley, Middlesex, on Pebruary 22nd, 1853. Por five years, he was articled to a solicitor’s office in Worcester and with Mrs. Wilson arrived at Wellington in November, 1890. In 1893, Mr. Wilson was appointed town clerk at Marton, and nine years later, took up a position with the Department of Health. He held the unique recoid of being a returning officer for more than 40 years and a Coroner for 20 years. As Mayor of Marion, he gave loyal service during the war of 1914-18. He was mainly instrumental in forming'the Kangitikei Chess Club, which became one of the leading clubs in New Zealand, and won the New Zealand chess championship in 1595-6.
