Eighth Army Pushing Forward

In Southern Tunisia, the Eighth Army, under General Montgomery, is pushing steadily forward and is now only a few miles from the JYLareth Line. British artillery is now exchanging fire with the guns of the Axis fortifications there. The German News Agency says: “The Eighth Army has concentrated part of its stronger forces against our southern flank, and its reconnaissance units have pushed into the area southeast of Shott el Jerid. ’ ’ This indicates that units have by-passed the Mareth Line and are far to the west of it. The southern extremity of the Shott el Jerid is 100 miles from Medenin. The News Agency added: “Therefore, it seems that the British are intending an encircling action, despite the conditions of the South Tunisian desert, which make operations with large forces very difficult.”
