Preparations Against Air Raids in Berlin
INTENSE DRIVE BY HIMMLER LONDON, Aug 16. Heinrich Himmler, in his capacity as chief of the A.R.P. services, is inten sively preparing Berlin for heavy raids, days the correspondent of The Times on the German frontier. Himmler’s S.S. Guards are displacing the Berlin civil police from A.R.P. worn and are also displacing the wardens of blocks and even the concierges of individual houses. Anti-air raid towers are being orected, and the whole system of anti-aircraft gun nests is being changed, thus making obsolete the R.A.F.’s information. Wooden barracks are being built on vacant land near Berlin so that those persons bombed out of their homes can be quickly accommodated. The R.A.F. raids are estimated to have rendered a million Germans homeless. ’Quake Damage at Hospital Over 40 chimneys in buildings belonging to the Palmerston North Hospital Board have been damaged as a result of the recent earthquakes. In addition, there has been some damage to buildings. Every endeavour is being made to have repairs to the chimneys carried out as quickly as possible, and the lighting of fires has been prohibited in- cases where chimneys are considered unsafe.
