400 Canadian Soldiers Walk Off Ship

PROTEST AGAINST UNSATISFACTORY CONDITIONS j Received Wednesday, 9.25 p.m. OTTAWA, April 21. The Defence Minister (Colonel Ralston) said corrective action was being takeu regarding an isolated incident in which 400 soldiers walked off a ship when embarking for England in protest against the rations and quarters. Colonel Ralston said the conditions aboard this ship were not up to the standard of most of the troopships but he expressed confidence that there would bo no excuse for repetition. The ship was late reaching port consequently there was insufficient time to clean up. After inspection the em-' barkation authorities decided to reduce the number aboard by 20 per cent, but a number were still dissatisfied and about 155 failed to sail.
