Effort to Cope With U-Boat Sinkings

Received Tuesday, 11.25 p.m. NEW YORK, April 21. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent says British naval officials are discussing plans with the Washington authorities for the more effective combating of shipping losses on the eastern coast of the United States. Recent United Nations’ shipping losses have exceeded the British and American shipbuilding rate and the majority of the losses are occurring on the American coast. • There is a possibility that Britain, which has large numbers of the smaller type of patrol ships, might divert some to duty in the Western Atlantic. Meanwhile, the United States is making every effort to step up its own patrol boat production. British officials partaking in the discussions arrived here with General Marshall and Mr. Harry Hopkins from London, but were identified only as three naval officers tfnd a high-ranking civilian.
