Laval Begins Work In New Vichy Post
LONDON, April 19. When Laval began work at the Hotel Dupare to-day as Chief of the Government, his first visitor was Marshal Petain, Chief of State, with whom he had a “long and cordial talk,’’ says a message from Vichy. Laval also saw Admiral Darlan, and authorised circles stated that there was a complete accord of views between the two. When interviewed, Laval said: “I am very touched by the welcome Marshal Petain has given me. Many difficulties have been smoothed out and my task has been greatly facilitated by the Chief of State ’a very clear understancliug of the present situation. “It is not correct to say that Marshal Petain lias relinquished his powers,” Laval added. “1 am head of the Government by virtue of tho power which Marshal Petain has delegated to me, but the authority of Marshal Petain is indispensable for the accomplishment of my mission. I shall find it necessary if I am to succeed, to support myself by his wisdom and experience.” Marshal Petain, in a broadcast today, said: “With M. Laval, at the tragic moment of our disaster, 1 founded a new order to effect the reconstruction of France. To-day, at a moment as decisive as June 1940 I find myself with him again for the purposes of resuming the work of national and European construction and reorganisation of the foundations which we laid together.” The Marshal added: “ Frenchmen, your wisdom, patience, and patriotism will help to overcome all ordeals and miseries. Support the Government. It gives you new grounds for belief and hope.”
