Australia’s War Bill

SYDNEY, April 20. Australia will spend £400,000,000 in tho.year ending on June 30, according to an announcement by the Treasurer, Mr. Ohifloy, who appealed in a broadcast last night for an intensified savings campaign. ‘ ‘ This is four times more than peacetime spending,” Mr. Chifley said, “and the burden will grow as the job grows harder. More men and women are employed, generally earning higher wages than ever before, but it is stupid folly for them to go on spending their incomes.” Mr. Chifley said that everyone was contributing to the Government by taxation and savings, but that it was necessary greatly to- increase the contributions and reduce the living standard to the barest essentials.
