King and Queen to Live in West End Flat
EARLY MOVE LIKELY LONDON, Jan. 24. Their Majesties the King and Queen have taken a flat on the fourth floor of a new steel and concrete building nearing completion in the West End, and hope to move in within a fortnight, save the Daily Mail. There are two reasons for their decision to become flat-dwellers: First,'the call-up is making increasing inroads on the palace household and their Majesties will require only a small staff for entertaining in their flat; secondly, it is well known that their'Majesties have always preferred a small, intimate home. The Queen once’ said that neither she nor the King was “Palaceconscious. ’’ The flat is specially built into a vast block of offices, comprising the only I living-quarters in the entire building. ■ The office block is already fully occupied. Their Majesties have their own “front door,” and also a private lift. They intend to use the flat between spells of engagements. The Queen, a few days ago, travelled from the country and spent a quarter of nn hour inspecting the new home. Workmen, who did not know for whom the flat was being built, were told to down tools and take an early luncheon.
