Reign of Terror in Occupied Europe

Grip Tightens as Hostility Grows COLD REALITY BEHIND “NEW ORDER” (British Official Wireless.) Received Alonday, 7 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 25. As undercurrents of hostility gather volume in the occupied countries of Europe, so the grip of Nazi terror tight' ens. In Austria families where sons or fathers have deserted from the German Army are being deliberately broken up, according to information reaching London. Wives have been sent to work in German towns exposed to British air raids, while boys under military age ara forced in to labour squadrons in Germany or Poland and girls are sent to farm work in Silesia. From Innsbruck, alone 40 such cases have been reported. In Poland sabotage continues, despita all German attempts to suppress it. Mass executions have taken place, which the Germans carry out as part of their policy of allocating the collective responsibility where sabotage occurs. The cold reality behind the new order is shown in different fashion in CzechoSlovakia, where the Germans have ceased to refer to the protectorate of Bohemia and Aloravia—now called * * the former Czech space.” Significant, too, is the fact that henceforth German will be the language spoken at Cabinet meetings in Prague. The lengths to which the Germane will (go to secure manpower are illustrated in the introduction of a new law in Norway, whereby young men may join the German armed forces or the Norwegian volunteer legion against Russia without the consent of their parents.

Twenty-two Polish railwaymen were collectively executed, according to a Gestapo communique, on charges of systematic pillage of German military transport at a railway junction on tha Polish-Czech border.

The Moscow radio savg that 576 deputies of Rumanian war prisoners, in conference at a Russian camp, appealed! to the Rumanian people to General Antonescu and make peace with' Russia. It was revealed at the ence that 13,000 had been shot buj Rumania for opposing Antonesen; also' that 230,000 Rumanians had been killed or wounded in the fighting at Odessa and in the Crimea.
