Catholics Must Choose Between Germany and God
REVELATIONS OF BISHOPS’ PASTORAL LETTER Received Friday, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 5.
The text of a pastoral letter from German bishops read in all Catholic churches in Germany on July 0 has reached London. The bishops enumerate the difficulties which the Nazis have placed in the Church’s way, namely restrictions on religious education, a ban on religious publications, a ban on pastoral visits to hospitals, interference with religious ceremonies and festivals, closing convents and religious institutions.
The letter says: “The practice of religion is being seriously impeded. You will no longer have a Catholic Congress or diocesan journals. Our Catholic private schools have been suppressed and religious instruction in other schools is more and more curtailed or forbdiden. We indignantly protest against the Nazis’ demand to choose between Germany and God. The Church is rendering the greatest possible service to the German people by preserving Christianity."
