BEAUTY’S 68, 19 AND 15

by MAX FACTOR, JR.

That law which none of us may defy or disregard, the law of averages, rules that about sixty-six out of overy hundred women have a “normal’’ skin, with this signifying that their complexion is neither too abundant in oil, or too lacking in it. Approximately 19 out of this same group of an average one hundred women will have skins which are to some degree too dry. The remaining fifteen women -of this group, our law of average insists, will present complexions which are somewhat too oily. Latin America

These averages may vary to some degree in different locales. Feminine complexions in the Latin-Americas, for instance, are rather generally more inclined to some degrees of over-oiliness than are those of the women in Canada. And women in tho mid-west of the United States will be found to have dry skins a trifle more frequently than tho general average would indicate.

It is personally important to each woman that she shall recognizo under which of the three classifications, normal, dry, or oily, her own complexion falls, and that she shall then conduct her beautification practices accordingly. Every Nigjht The woman whose skin is dryer than normal, for instance, should follow this procedure, every night, unfailingly: First, she should remove her make-up and thoroughly cleanse her skin with cleansing cream. When this full complexion cleaning process has been comf>leted, it should be followed with a iberal application of skin cream. This should be left on all night, with any slight trace of surplus being removed in the morning. It is also especially essential that the woman with a dry skin use make-up foundation before applying powder and rouge. Massage

The conditioning procedure for the normal skin is generally the same as that of the dry skin, except that the application of skin cream may be some-

what lesser in quantity, and may be completely massaged into and absorbed by the skin before retiring. It is still essential, however, that the normal skin be thoroughly cleansed aagin in the morning, before makingup. It is important that women whose complexions are definitely on the oily side should avoid nourishing skin creams. These women should not, however, make the mistake of carrying this avoidance of cream so far as to include cleansing cream, as many women mistakenly do. A high degree of cleanliness is of the utmost importance to an

oily skin, and cleansing cream is necessary to its achievement. Skin Freahener Once the oilv skin has been creamcleaned at night, the last vestines of this cream should be removed with skin J'reshcDor. The application of skin freshener should be repeated in the morning. If the skin is very oily, an astringent make-up foundation rather than the regular one which is best for dry or normal skins, should be used as a base for rouge and powder. Cleansing and conditioning of any of the threg types of skin should be a regular daily procedure. Lack of regularity in treatment offers a great peril to skin health and beauty. Neglectfd complexions take on an appearance of age much more swiftly than those which are consistently cared for. IFilm Stars Looking at motion pictures as they come to vour theatre, you will be able to note that tho complexions of the actresses whoso images you see there, from those of very young personalities such as Lana Turner and Marsha Hunt on up to the more mature beauty of j Marlene Dietrich or Barbara Stanwyck, are all groomed to smooth perfection. I Never in pictures or private life can jone see a stellar complexion which betrays the shine which comes from too much oil in the skin, or the suggestion lof roughness which comes from a dry 'skin. This inability to see such skin manifestations does not mean that none of I the firm stars have dry skin which are too oily, or too dry. The law of averages mentioned in the beginning of this articles applies to these famous ladies just as much as it does to you. Your Beauty But these careerists of filmdom must jbe constantly cognizant of how important it is to glamour to gnard against the apparency of any departure ! from a normal skin appearance.
