Racing Will Give Pointers to Christmas Prospects
FIRST RACE AT NOON—-WIN-AND-PLACE BETTING The summer meeting of the Woodyille District Jockey Club will be opened to-day and it will be concluded on Monday. The form disclosed at this meeting is always expected to prove a reliable guide to the prospects of horses engaged at the big Christmas carnivals. The acceptances for to-day’s programme and big and keen racing is assured. The principal events on to-day’s card are the Bolton Handicap and the Oete Handicap, which is the open sprint. There are ten acceptors for the Boßon Handicap, including the Auckland Cup candidates Old Bill, Yogi and Khurja. Another Auckland Cup horse, Rakanui, is topweight for the Oete Handicap, the field for which includes Premature, Burra Sahib and Rakahanga, which figure in the list for the Auckland Railway Handicap. Old Bill heads the list for the Bolton Handicap with 9.12. He had a race at Feilding last Saturday and a work-out over a mile and a-quarter on Thursday. Ho is in great heart at present but he will be giving away 221bs. to Aurora’s Star, a winner at Levin, and Yogi, who was fourth behind Gladynev, Rakanui and Blue Border in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. Dynasty beat all but Kotua in the Manchester Handicap at Feilding and if he has gone on the right way since he should prove a tougher proposition down the long straight. Aurora’s Star worked well on Thursday and she looks brighter than she did before Feilding. Hunting Cat is always worthy of respect. Authoress has had one race this season and she finished third. Master Cyklon has been racing very well this season and with 7.2 he is certain to be in the picture. Pern won at Napier and Khurja is probably improved as a result of his Feilding races. Star Zone is the last horse on tho card and she might prove' the best of those on tho bottom half of the card. She ran a great race in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding and many declaro that she should have beaten Red Cat. Red Cat, however, is a good sort and she is as game as they make ’em. Old Bill, Yogi, Dynasty and Star Zone are likely to. carry most money.
There are eleven acceptors for the Oete Handicap and Rakanui, one of the best horses in the Dominion, is at the head of the list with 9.3. Next is Augment with 8.12 and he is followed by the three Railway Handicap candidates Premature (8.8), Burra Sahib (8.5) and Rakahanga (8.3). Premature beat a field of high-class sprinters on the first day of the Feilding meeting and on the Monday, Rakahanga, who had not had the best of luck during the running of the race won by Premature, scored just as easily but a bigger margin. Burra Sahib has started seven times this season and only once has he been out of the money. He has been up against the best in the land and with B. H. Morris in the saddle to-day he should take a lot of beating. It is possible that Cheerful Lady, who has won on the course, and Flying Spy, who has been working brilliantly, will prove the best of those lower down in the list. Recent form suggests that the favourites will be Burra Sahib, Premature and Rakahanga.
Division Race. There aro 37 acceptors for the Maiden Stakes and it seems certain that the race will have to be run in divisions with the stakes increased to provide £65 for each division.
