The hottest day was the 25th, with a temperature of 70 degrees, and the coldest day was the 18th, w r ith a temperature of 54 degrees. Mr, E. Titcombe presided over the monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School Committee. Reference w-as made to the pending entrance to the Air Force of the chairman (Mr. H. A. Hannay) and he was congratulated on his success in passing the examinations. Mr. M- E. Perreau wrote tendering his resignation from the committee for health reasons and enclosing a donation of £2 2s for the children's Christmas effort. Mr. Perreau’s resignation was accepted with regret, he having been a member for 24 years. It was decided to place on record his service. The donation was received with thanks. A 'letter was received from the Wanganui ! Education Board regarding the fenceround the school property, intimating that a conference was being arranged between the Board architect and the Borongu Council and the committee was asked to have representatives in attendance. Messrs. Hannay, D. D. McKenzie and R. O. Horn blow were appointed. Correspondence was also received from the Board in connection with constructing a swimming pool at the school for instructional purposes. A subsidy of £1 for £1 was available and the costs of a suitable pool would be approximately £250. Details of the project were submitted by the headmaster (Mr. N. M. Tunaiclirf) and after discussion it was decided to obtain quotations. It was decided to make a request to the Board for the topdressing of the school entrance and tennis courts. The headmaster reported ; that the secondary school roll had fallen to 49 and the primary school roll was 408. Attendance had been quite good. Armistice Day had been observed in the usual manner. Term examinations were in full swing and it had been decided to hold a Parents’ Day during the last school week. The report concluded with Christmas greetings irom the headmaster and staff. 'The report was received, the chairman congratulating Mr. TunniclifE on the progress the school was showing under bis guidance and reciprocating the greetings on behalf of the committee.

Much care and attention has been devoted to the environments at the primary department of the local District High school and, as a result, the grounds are now in first-class order, and present a most attractive sight. The gardens are ablazo with colours and their neat and pleasing appearance have been the subject of expressions of admiration.

A meeting of the members of the Foxton Dental Clinic committee was held on Thursday evening last and was presided over by Mr. M. B. Bergia (chairman). Also present were Messrs. N. H. Tunnicliff (headmaster), T. V. Crotty, W. Caithness, J. C. Fowlei (secretary) and the Dental Nurse (Miss B. Vigor Brown). Mr. Caithness, the newly elected representative from the Oroua Downs School, was welcomed by the chairman. The committee recorded its appreciation of the services rendered by Miss G. B. Davies during the period she acted as relieving Denal Nurse. A letter was received from the Department of Health advising that the contribution of £3l) per annum for dental nurse, previously charged to the committee, would be abolished and that a grant up to £25 per anuum would be made to cover certain other charges. In future no fees will be charged to children receiving treatment. The grant made by tho Department, however, will not cover the whole cost of maintaining tho services previously rendered and the committee will be pleased to receive voluntary contributions from parents to enable the satisfactory treatment rendered in the past to be continued. The annual meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association was held on Thursday evening last and, in view of the fact that the association is of great ; benefit to the town and is a necessity ; in the event of an emergency, the small attendance at tho meeting was disappointing. The reports disclosed that the affairs of the Association were in a satisfactory condition, a considerable quantity of equipment being on hand to meet any emergency and it was pleasing to note that no liabilities had ooen incurred. The election of officers resulted in Mr. W. E. Hale being appointed chairman for a further year and Mr. C. F. Anderson was re-elected to tho position of honourary secretary. It was decided to follow the principle adopted in previous years of appointing a working committee only and dispensing with president and vicepresidents. The following were elected to tho committee with power to add: Mesdames V. H. Hofman, M. Petersen, ,T. Crotty, F. Gay, B. Daws and Messrs. F. Gay and L. G. Potts. The coming year is likely to prove a difficult one and the demands on the Association heavy. Persons interested are asked to communicate with the chairman or secretary.
