Pauline Matthews, formerly of Palmerston North, was successful in passing the advanced examinations in the Royal Academy of Dancing, held in Wellington last week. Holding the lead throughout, Mrs. Newton (Wanganui) beat Mrs. Cross, 5 and 4, to win the Hawke's Bay championship at the Napier ladies’ golf tournament.

Miss E. P. Tennent, New Zealand Coramandant-in-Chief of the Red Cross | Voluntary Aids, was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday for a meeting of the North Island committee and returned to her home at Lower Hutt this morning.

Sympathetic reference was made by Mrs. W. G. Short, president of the Oroua Federation of Women's Institutes, at the half-yearly Council meeting in Feilding yesterday to the loss suffered by Mrs. R. Austin, of Pahiatua, former secretary of tho Wellington Federation, by the death of her son on active service, and in her anxiety over her husband’s illness. It was resolved to send kind thoughts from the meeting.

Miss Judith Copeland, who has been released from duty on the administrative staff of the Palmerston North Hospital for the duration of the war for secretarial duty with the W.A.A.F. at Ohakea, was met by fellow members at the hospital yesterday and presented with a suitcase, Mr. W. H. Galbraith making the presentation and offering good wishes for success in her new sphere.

Members and friends of tho Rosemary Club (soldiers’.wives) assembled at tho clubroom recently to enjoy afternoon tea, in celebration of the official opening of the club. Tho room, a spacious sunny one overlooking the Square gardens, has been put at the disposal of the members through tho generosity of Mrs. W. B. Tennent, and will provide a most comfortable mceting place. Before commencing proceedings, Rev. De do Candole read a prayer which he had specially written for the club. Mrs. J. C. Riddle, president, welcomed members and visitors and expressed the hope that all would enjoy many happy hours together. Special thanks were given to those who had prepared the room and provided the furniture and necessary fittings. Mrs. W. A. Jacques, patroness, opened the club, and gave a brief address on the meaning of the word “rosemiVy. ” Mrs. Viles called for a vote of thanks to Mrs. Tennent, this being carried by acclamation. The visitors gave cheers for the club, and afternoon tea was served. Apologies for absence were received from Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Tennent and Mr. .T. Hodgens, M.P.
