Romans Regard Vatican As Their Protection
AIR-RAID IMMUNITY LONDON, Oct. 6. The people of Rome regard the presence of the Pope as their protection, f-or which reason they aro, on the whole, little concerned about air raids, says the former Romo corresppndent of the French paper Le Temps, M. Gentizon. The Romans, he says, refer to the Pope as “our Pontificial lightning conductor.” Nevertheless, the air-raid sirens are tested every day, and the blackout is rigorously enforced, even in the Vatican. The people of Italy are not supposed to listen to foreign radio broadcasts, but no penalty is provided for offenders unless they spread what they hear. M. Gentizon estimates that Germany is sending Italy a million tons of coal a month, but ho thinks that the electrification of the railways, with hydroelectric pow.'r as the main factor, is enabling Italy to resist the economic blockade. He says that he saw little misery in Rome, but he noticed that there was not much food in the shops. Clothing has become simplified, and includes much artificial fibre.
