Gallops at Trentham

NINE CANDIDATES FOR THE WANGANUI MEETING Trenthara stables will be represented by a team of nine horses on the opening day of the Wanganui spring meeting, and advantage was taken of the improved track conditions yesterday morning to gallop the majority of them the trial grass being available. Enrich (Carlisle) had ftignow (C. Burgess) a?| a partner over five furlongs in lmin. Bsec., the last half-mile in 55 sec. Siglow, despito having the worse of the weights, had a slight advantage at the close. Foreign Coin (Stewart), who galloped on Saturday, was restricted to easy work, although he speeded up in the run home. The Guineas candidate looks well, but may require racing. Erinscourt (N. Vaughan) and Madame Rachel (J. Garth) jumped away at the five furlongs pog to run their last half-mile in 55sec. Great Night (Vaughan) and Red Dash (J. Garth) ran their first two furlongs in 25sec., and the former, who still looks a trifle burly, was stopping before the end of sis furlongs, run in lmin. 24 First Round (Garth) was holding Tractometer (Vaughan) after running the last five furlongs of a six furlongs task in lmin. 9 4-sscc. Arctic Night (J. Garth), an unraced maiden, shewed promise by holding off Matalitc (Vaughan) in a three furlongs scamper in 37sec. The latter, however, is a lazy track worker. Blue Border (A. Sagar) came home his last three furlongs in 41sec.; Absolve (Carlisle) ran half a mile in 54 2- Trekalong, hftlf a mile in 55 l-ssec.; Te Mama, half a mile in 52 3- Yurilla (Vaughan), who showed brilliant speed early, was several lengths clear of Da.ljarrock (F. Gough), aftfrr running half a mile in 54see., but the latter was not pressed; and Cicada (Reardon) covered the same distance in 53sec., the two-yoar-old Martin Fox being of no use to her. Master Lackhara (Cl. Burgess), Ruling Star (H. Anderson), and Lady Boswal (F. Boyer) went out to engage in a school over four flights of hurdles, but the last-named ran into the railing as ihoy were about to jump off, opening up her shoulder. Although she wont on to negotiate the obstacles, she jumped big and carefully. The other pair gave a good display, Master Lackham taking the final obstacle a shade in front.

WANGANUI SCRATCHINGS Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Sept. 2. Wanganui scratchings: Raceline at 3.20 for tho Marangai Handicap; Alienate at 5.30 for the Maiden. EXCHANGING STALLIONS “A recent visitor—a director of England’s principal bloodstock agency—is of opinion that, for its advancement, Australian breeders should treat breeding from a national standpoint, and use each other’s stallions to a much greater extent than is now customary,, ’ writes “Pilot” in the Sydney Bulletin. ‘‘Well, as mast of our breeders are sellers, and therefore in the business for personal gain, they are unlikely to adopt that idea. Comparatively few race to any extent —a pity they don’t—and, though many of their mares might be better suited by stallions other than their own, it would be almost too ranch to expect them to go out of their way to boost those at other studs. It was disappointing to read that our English visitor thought American bloodstock much superior to that of Australia, but it is possible his opinion—as a representative of a firm of bloodstock exporters —was slightly biased by the fact that American buyers are prepared to go to very much higher prices for stallions than those of Australia. A high-class English stallion might be a good purchase for America up to £50,000, but he would not be a sound commercial proposition for Australia at that figure. It would not bo warranted by either stud fees or yearling prices.’’ RACING DATES Sept. 4,6: Wanganui J.C. Sept. 6: Otago Hunt Club. Sept. 13: Ashburton C.R.C. Sept. 13: Carterton R.C. Sept. 13, 15: Avondale J.C. Sept. 18, 20: Geraldine R.C.
